Hungry, very hungry;
she is locked in a mind
that does not always
belong to her.

Brave House Secrets
She bears the burdens of her experiences while being annihilated with love. She is the unacceptable object. She is truth staring at the everyday. She is an object on display. She is me as I look into the mirror and sense the long ago shame creeping out the skin of my today.

I am dressed in a beautiful white dress with large blue and yellow daisies. A petticoat tailors the skirt. With the halter top, the dress resembles 1950’s Marilyn Monroe. It is the sweet spot of summer and he has invited me to a family reunion.
He has dressed me. Everything about me in detail. Then he says, “Take off your underwear.” I do not want to, but in the end, I obey.
The family reunion is uncomfortable and strange. I simply wish to hide. On the way home, he asks if I noticed any extra attention from the men in his family? And, did I notice the disdain of the women?
I said no. I really was simply trying to survive my own discomfort and fear as he paraded me along.
Well, the men could smell you. They were attracted to you for sex; so jealous because I have you. The women were repulsed because you are a slut. You have on no underwear.
What do you do but sit in quiet humiliation; wishing to simply disappear in shame. And there is just not a damn thing you can do about it at this point. You do not yet know you have an option.
In the United States alone, four to seven children lose their lives each day from abuse and neglect. 3-10 women lose their lives each day from domestic violence. 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually abused by the time they are 18. 1 in 7 women and 1 in 71 men will be raped at some point in their lifetime. Brave House Secrets as a series is a hunger for action! This is Unacceptable!
These statistics are just that, statistics. Numbers are only as good as they are reported. And even then, what do numbers really do? The all of it is simply unacceptable, and yet it is unfortunately reality. People held captive in domestic servitude. People held captive in the sex trade. People held captive in forced labor. Yes, it happens here; where we live.
People held as chattel.
People, male and female are not objects!
We are people. Humans.
paint much love, always,
